It went over this reader's head, too. I didn't give much thought to Tanaeja's brother's illness. I guess I assumed cancer, not AIDS. I can't think of anything hinting at AIDS. I shall have to look more closely - the book is still on my desk at school.

I have a question about this title. The following sentence appeared in the Booklist review: "Addressing such subjects as the Holocaust, bullying, God's presence, and (in a subtle way that will go over many readers' heads) AIDS, the novel makes a convincing case for rose-colored glasses, dancing the can-can, and playing joyful music with your big brother." Well, I was one of the people who totally missed an AIDS reference. The only person that I can think of is Tanaeja's brother. Any thoughts?

Dollar Tree said they would refill them for me for free since it is for school and I (you) purchased them there. Their manager is the one who suggested I could let the helium out and reuse them. But he also said they wouldn't last very long the second time... We'll see. The kids come to school on Monday 24th, so I'm not going to fill them until the 23rd.

I was quite interested in the fact that the top British Awards come from the librarians. There has been some discussion on the Newbery Award in the U.S. It has lost grassroots credibility in the last ten years. You may wish to see the School Library Journal article on the subject: http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6600688.html

I am a big fan of Children's Choice Awards. You may wish to check out our Illinois Award and consider adding some of those to your library: www.rcyrba.org

You will notice that last year's nominees included the Australian title, Ranger's Apprentice: Ruins of Gorlan. My students absolutely adore the series and we have done some direct importing of the most recent titles as they are yet unavailable from the U.S. publisher.

So glad your family reads around the world!

Hi. Great to see an interest in Children's Literary Awards beyond the USA. With four children, eight and under, my wife Maddi' & I enjoy household filled with award winning books and always make sure tha the Caldecott & Newbery winners find hteir way into our school library

I publish a number of websites dedicated to covering book awards throughout the English speaking world which may be of interest. There are some lovely children and Young adult awards in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and Canada. The network, which cover over 250 prizes, can be accessed via LiteraryAwards.com.au or LiteraryAwards.co.uk or BookAwards.co.nz!

Regards to all from Australia

I'm currently volunteering in E's school library to help with end-of-the-year inventory. No card catalog, but no scanner either, so we are working from a printed shelf list. I never had to do actual inventory as an academic library director (that's what student workers are for), so this is a new adventure for me.
